Unit 21 - M1: Discuss Strengths and Weaknesses of my Ideas

Idea 1:

Strengths - I believe this idea is strong as it will not have to be made on a high budget, the show uses younger actors and the settings will mainly be in the streets, therefore the cost of the episodes will be lower than that of a show that uses a lot of adult actors. A second strength of this idea is that young audiences generally enjoy a more transgressive subject, the audience will also be able to gain the audience pleasure of personal identity as they will be able to relate to the teenage characters as they will share some of the same problems with them.

Weaknesses - One of the main weaknesses of this idea is the use of football stadiums effecting the budget, because this idea involves football the use of stadiums, fields, kits and equipment will have a large impact on the budget making this idea slightly unlikely to be taken on by a company such as the BBC. Another weakness is that because the topic of the show revolves around drugs the target audience is limited and the show may have to be played after the 9pm watershed, the topic may also not appeal to people as much as a tamer topic would.

Idea 2:

Strengths - This idea has very similar strengths and weaknesses to the previous idea, the use of young actors will bring down the budget of this show because they will not need to be payed as much as adult actors. The theme of this show is also transgressive so will be targeted more at the younger audience who are the most likely audience for BBC 3, an online streaming service.

Weaknesses - Much like the previous idea this program has the weakness of being focused on football so if the use of official team names and brands are to be used then this may dig into the budget of the show and also if the football games are to be recorded then permission will have to be obtained from the club.

Idea 3:

Strengths - This idea is strong because the plot of the idea itself is very original and interesting, i think this plot will attract people to it due to its unique nature. The BBC offers no other show like this and also features very little sci-fi programs. The use of CGI means that the cost of casting can be cut down because CGI characters/extras can be used.

Weaknesses - Although the use of CGI can be a strength its also a weakness because the use of extensive CGI and green screening is very expensive due to the cost of all the equipment and also in post production due to the cost to employ editors and buy software. Another weakness is that the sci-fi genre is a niche market and may not appeal to a large target audience which cuts down BBC 3's profits and the shows opportunities.
