Unit 21 - P1: Interpreting The Breif

Our Client Brief was;

"You have been asked by BBC3 executives to plan ideas for a pilot episode for a brand-new television drama aimed at a 15-21 year olds.

The budget for the programme is quite low.
Once you have created your ideas you will pitch them to the channel. As a starting point you will need to:
 Research the channel, programme type and target audience
 Develop programme ideas
 Develop a proposal and documentation for your ideas
 Plan and deliver your pitch to the client

You should present your work using a range of mediums in the planning, production and post- production stages. This could include photographs, audio commentary or written notes to evidence your progression and development of your production in the production stages."

The History of BBC 3

BBC 3 started as a channel on the tv however in 2012 BBC 3 changed to a fully online program and is no longer available. Educate, Inform & Entertain is the slogan of the BBC, this shows what types of programs that they will want to publish and display.

Demographics - We have be given the target audience of 15 to 21 year olds, the usual type of programme the young audience like to watch is something that they can relate to. However young people often watch programmes that are transgressive as they can experience the other side of life through the show. The drama i create will have to have a 15 certificate which means it cannot feature things such as heavy sexual content, violence and drug use however they can be included lightly.

conventions - Dramas tend to be a serialised narrative spread over many episodes, the sound track is very significant in a drama and can help to further the plot. The usual run time of an episode will be around 45 minutes and the series would contain approximately 10 episodes. there are many different genres within drama such as crime, fantasy, superheroes etc. however through research i believe that crime is the most popular with the target audience i am addressing (15-21yo)

Industry Requirements - All programmes delivered to the BBC must be fully editorially and technically checked and ready for transmission prior to delivery. The BBC is funded by tv licences so they are required to create content for all markets.

Constraints - The brief states that the budget i have for the programme is low so it will need to feature basic props, settings etc. The programme will also have to feature very basic or no SFX due to the low budget. Another constraint is that the show will need to have to be a 15 rating to go with the audience.

D1: Script Evaluation.

D1 The Brief - The Evaluation - Il Caviera Analysis

Strengths - There are many strengths to my film. The film has a strong plot that is easy for the audience to follow along to and is not too in depth that i would be trying to cram too much into a short space of time. The film is also easily identifiable with the genre i selected. I am certain i have been successful with my film as others in the class have have left positive feedback on it however,  i have had certain criticisms aswell which helped improve the script. For my strengths i have been told that the story line is told really well , and that it is very descriptive and is making them want to watch the film when produced. Also, between each draft i made, personally i found that i saw both mistakes i made, and the growth made me think to myself whether this would work as a short film or not. As far as how the audience will respond to the short film i hope for a positive response on the finished product.

Weaknesses - The main weakness of my blog is the actors. In my screenplay the actors are primarily older men in there 20's so making a in school production would have been very hard sourcing the actors that i would need. The film would also need a lot of props like Fake Guns etc. and this would be very costly to to get all the props i would need and also very time wasting for example delivery times.

Opportunities - Through this experience i have gained skills which i will be able to carry on through life. I have now learnt what a difficult and time consuming process it is to make a short movie. This has helped me learn my own capabilities of script writing as well as open my mind on how to think more creatively in terms of creating a story. Through the Unit 22 P1 i have learnt how universal script writing is through different genres such as Film, TV, Radio and Games. As i have never written a script before, i didn't want to go straight into my script writing without knowing anything about formatting or how to correctly write a script. To gain some experience and knowledge i used an app on my iPad called 'Celtx' , this is a script creator which has all the formatting for script writing which helps when writing a script. When writing my script on 'Celtx' i was able to make multiple drafts on different documents and keep track of the progress i was making. But i still had certain gaps in my knowledge so to fix this i did further additional research on search Google and YouTube, this was to get influence as well and learn things about behind the scenes of the script stage.

Treats -  There are a few threats to this project which could have prevented me from succeeding in the completion of the task. Some of these stemmed from my lack of experience of to create a script which everyone in the class will fully understand. Another factor that would have prevented me from succeeding was me going into the task without any practice or experience, the lack of practice and experience would have lead to me completing the task in a worse quality than i would have wanted or maybe not even being able to complete the task at all. Another threat was not being able to finish my script on time or other work which complimented/worked along side to it, this is down to the fact that my time management isn't the greatest. This doesn't help as i can be distracted very easily at times but at times i have a very strong work ethic meaning i can get a good amount of good quality work done as well.Conclusion- Overall i think that i  have learnt a lot through this task and it has been a great experience for me and very fulfilling looking back at the final drafts of my script. This experience has also provided me a new point view and has allowed me to become more creative. On top of that I can now move forward in understanding the commitment necessary for these things and appreciating the amount of preparation necessary and not just on the part I’ve learned with scripts.

The Client Brief states that; the film can be a maximum of 10 minutes long, must conform to a recognisable genre, we can work in a maximum group of 3 and we must all have specific roles in the production, and finally, all content must be original and produced by you. I think that my film works with the brief as i am working in a group of 3 and the film will also conform to the action genre. the screenplay is below 10 pages and one page on the screenplay correlates to one min of screen time.

M4: How the Film Meets The Client Brief

The Client Brief states that; the film can be a maximum of 10 minutes long, must conform to a recognisable genre, we can work in a maximum group of 3 and we must all have specific roles in the production, and finally, all content must be original and produced by you.

Pineclones is in the guide lines of the client brief as it meets all of the requirements we were given by the client as it is below the maximum 10 minute run time, it also easily identifies as a horror film and we are working in a group of three and each member of the group has a specific role.

Ben: Camera Operator/ Editor

Aalyan: Director/ Sound
Sam: Consumes/Props/ Equipment Manager

Codes and Conventions of a horror film:

The common codes and conventions of a horror film are as follows; a title sequence at the start, ambient diegetic sounds, low lighting, tense music, close ups, POV, blood, violence, hand held camera work, no phone signal, early death, shot scene cuts and isolated locations.
I believe that Pineclones easily identifies as a horror film for many reasons. The music we will be using will be that of a horror film (slow build up with an intense beat to build tension in the film). we will also be taking advantage of post production and make the shots look a lot darker to give the allusion that we filmed at night and we will interpret subtle tints of red, a colour commonly attached to a film in the horror genre.

The setting for pineclones is an isolated place which is often used in horror films to give the impression the the victims are all alone with the killer. POV shots in pineclones allow the audience to see the world from the man in the masks eyes as he chases after the boys. Disturbing sounds are used throughout pineclones, most of the sounds we use are Ambient Diegetic sounds like footsteps, diegetic sounds build tension as the audience can hear the noice but they can't see the source of it. And finally we plan to use long periods of slow editing to foreshadow something bad that is about to happen this is done because it helps to build up tension in the film.

Audience Pleasures:

Diversion

In our film there are many things that relate to diversion. There is some comedic factors within the film that come from the characters relationship with each other. The comedic factors are used as a relief as the film is relatively action packed and serious to fit with the horror genre. This correlates to another entertaining factor with that being the action within the film, we have small confrontation/fight scene which then leads to a fact paced foot chase in a POV shot.

Relationships

Relationships are a major part of the film as within the short film as we don't get the time we would in a series to get to know the characters so the audience needs to see the great friendship bond between 3 close friends straight away in the film. In pineclones we reinforced this by showing how they were willing to risk their own lives to save the others. In the film when Joe is found dead, the boys are initially reluctant to leave but they soon realise that by staying there they are putting themselves at risk. Another example of the bond between the friends is shown in the last scene when Aalyan shows lots of emotion when he sees Ben being killed by the ' Masked Man', in this scene Aalyan tries to save his life but is too slow. consequently leading to an emotional final scene in which Aalyan realises that he has lost his two best friends.
This film was made for a young audiences and i believe my film conforms to that due to its excitement and scary theme. Pineclones also has hints of humour that breaks apart the fast paced style of the short film.

To meet the client brief we exported the film as an MP4 file format with a codec of H.264 at 1080p the reasoning for this was is because it makes it is high def and hd meaning it can be played back at a film festival which is required for the brief, the codec makes it suitable for uploading to the internet which allows us to publish and distribute online.

M1: Justify Content, Distribution and Marketing Methods to Meet Client Brief

The film we have created fits the brief as it is below the maximum 10 minute run time, it also easily identifies as a horror film, we are working in a group of three and each member of the group has a specific role. Ben is the acting camera operator/manager, Sam is the editor/audio manager, Aalyan is the director and equipment/prop manager. The idea sparked from a real life experience of the directors and is therefore completely original. The music we will use will be sourced from a copyright free website/content creator for example NCS on Youtube.

I have gone through the available short film distributors and have decided that Shorts International ltd. is the best choice.

Shorts International Ltd. (formally Brit Shorts)

Shorts International Ltd. is the world's leading short movie entertainment company with the globe's largest catalogue dedicated to short movies. They bring the best short movies to audiences in the United States, Europe and Asia whether they are in movie theatres, watching cable television, using their iPad or online.
Because of the available short film distributors not specifically distributing horror films we have decided to base our decision on what the distributor offers, for example having the "largest catalogue dedicated to short movies" and being able to offer the best short films over the widest variety of areas such as United States, Europe and Asia.
The marketing of our film is done primarily over social media using a twitter page that has gained followers that are following along with the production process the benefits of using social media as a marketing technique is that it is free to do so doesn't take from the profit, it is also very flexible so you can upload material at any time. We also have a poser design that we are using to advertise Pineclones to the market. Posters are a good method of marketing because they can be placed in cinemas, film festivals and around towns are are not very expensive to produce and display. A poster that is eye catching and memorable will help to increase the recognition for our film. Other methods of marketing we could have used is film trailers to be displayed on YouTube and our social media and also the sale of merchandise to help get the brand name out in the market.

We believe that Pineclones would be suitable for the intended film festival audience due to the excitement that the film offers, Pineclones offers the audience diversification due to its fantasy and sci-fi/horror theme that helps them become distracted from there everyday lives and feel immersed in the content.

Pineclones the film fits the genre of horror, the reason being that it meets the codes and conventions of a horror movie. In Pineclones the idea of supernatural is prominent with the antagonist being a supernatural character. furthermore in Pineclones there is character death as well as murder this is a convention of the horror genre another reason to why the movie relates to the horror genre

For a horror movie to be really classed in the horror genre it has to meet certain conventions them being, a supernatural theme to the movie either a character or power, or an act of revenge on a character in the movie, also a horror movie needs death and murder as well as having people survive from a near death experience to possibly show that it is all as real as it seems. Some horror movies also include religious beliefs to show that even religion may not be able to protect you.

In Pineclones I feel we tick most of these boxes, starting with the convention of supernatural. In Pineclones the antagonist is represented by a supernatural character, we also relate to death and murder with the 'masked man' murdering a character, thus allows others to escape from a near death experience.
