Film Editing Process



As the first part of editing we imported
our media files from the camera SD card and
into Final Cut Pro. this gives us the ability to drag and drop the clips into the timeline as we wish.










After the clips have been dragged and dropped into the timeline then we had to link up the dialogue recordings. This is because when we were filming our short movie we used and external microphone that Aalyan was holding so that we could capture the dialogue better than the camera could. he then clapped and we linked up the clap in the video and the sound recording.








Pineclones was set/scripted to be filmed at night however after experimenting with the camera we found that filming at night caused the video to become grainy and of a poor quality so our solution was to use FCP's 'Day to Night' filter which can be changed and customised to make your clip filmed in the day appear to be filmed at night.








To make the final credits of the film we inserted a black cut and stretched to the desired length, we then inserted text displaying our names and roles. the same technique was used on the opening title screen.

M2: Consideration of Legal and Ethical Issues

Legal -

15 – Suitable only for 15 years and over - No one younger than 15 may see a 15 film in a cinema. No one younger than 15 may rent or buy a 15 rated video work.

Imitable behaviour - Dangerous behaviour (for example, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on detail which could be copied. Whether the depiction of easily accessible weapons is acceptable will depend on factors such as realism, context and setting.


Threat - There may be strong threat and horror. A sustained focus on sadistic or sexual threat is unlikely to be acceptable.

Language - There may be strong language. Very strong language may be permitted, depending on the manner in which it is used, who is using the language, its frequency within the work as a whole and any special contextual justification.

Violence - may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. Strong sadistic violence is also unlikely to be acceptable. There may be detailed verbal references to sexual violence but the depiction of sexual violence must be discreet and justified by context.

Above are the BBFC regulations for a media production being rated as a 15. I believe Pineclones meets the criteria for being rated as such.  Pineclones doesn't feature any Imitable Behavior such as self harm however it does show the murder of one of our characters however this is done in a non-violent/detailed way and there is no blood or gore. Pineclones does feature the Threat of a masked man chasing the characters be we believe this is a light usage of a threatening character and the costume design used doesn't make the character look scary. Pineclones does feature the use of Strong Language however it isn't used in large amounts with the odd curse word being featured in the dialogue, there is also no use of intense strong language. Finally Pineclones Shows very brief Violence in the final scene that shows the death of the character 'ben' however it is light violence and there is no detail on pain or injury of the character. 

The other legal issues surrounding my production are: Contracts for actors, Permission to Film in Locations and Copyright Laws. All of our actors signed contracts to be in the film and they agreed with the terms and conditions this contract gives us the permission to use the actors and there characters on screen and in our production. We filmed pinecones on Ilkley Moor which is an area with no photography or videography restrictions so there was no legal restrictions on what we could do however Ilkley moor is surrounded by privately owned moorland so we had to stay in the area that we chose to film in. copyright - copyright issues can occur when inputting music and sound effects, to deal with this we used royalty free music from a website so that the music couldn't be claimed. 

Ethical -

Pineclones only shows one specific social group and that is teenage boys, I think that the representation that we used for this group is fair the teenagers are drinking under age, this is not seen in the film but one character asked "does anyone want a beer" in the UK 85% of 15-17 year olds say they drink underage and this has been represented in the film. I don't think that we represented the teenage boys in a bad way as we made them out to be resourceful and smart however one of the characters, Ben, is represented to be a violent character when the masked man is assaulted with a bottle. taking into account the Effects model i don't think that Pineclones features anything that would inspire young audiences to imitate the behavior as it shows not use of drugs and no heavy violence it is also a fictional storyline that would never happen in real life.

Feb 2018 - We received the brief for our unit 3 work that states how we must make our short film.

Feb 2018 - Aalyan and I decided that we would create the film 'Pineclones' and he would direct.

6th of March - Actor contracts have been signed.

May 2018 - First dates for filming and production are decided for 28th of May.

May 2018 - Production dates were missed as cast was busy.

30th of June 2018 - Production dates are decided for 2nd of July.

2nd of July 2018  - Filming Started and completed.

4th of July 2018 - Editing has started.

8th of July 2018 - Editing has finished and the film is completed.

School Break - 6 Weeks

September 2018 - issues with IT department means that the film is unable to be exported and published.

M3 : How Pineclones Confirms Its Genre

Pineclones the film fits the genre of horror, the reason being that it meets the codes and conventions of a horror movie. In pineclones the idea of supernatural is prominent with the antagonist being a supernatural character. furthermore in pineclones there is character death as well as murder this is a convention of the horror genre another reason to why the movie relates to the horror genre

For a horror movie to be really classed in the horror genre it has to meet certain conventions them being, a supernatural theme to the movie either a character or power, or an act of revenge on a character in the movie, also a horror movie needs death and murder as well as having people survive from a near death experience to possibly show that it is all as real as it seems. Some horror movies also include religious beliefs to show that even religion may not be able to protect you.

In Pineclones I feel we tick most of these boxes, starting with the convention of supernatural.In Pineclones the antagonist is represented by a supernatural character, we also relate to death and murder with the 'masked man' murdering a character, thus allows others to escape from a near death experience.

Unit 21 - P1: Interpreting The Breif

Our Client Brief was;

"You have been asked by BBC3 executives to plan ideas for a pilot episode for a brand-new television drama aimed at a 15-21 year olds.

The budget for the programme is quite low.
Once you have created your ideas you will pitch them to the channel. As a starting point you will need to:
 Research the channel, programme type and target audience
 Develop programme ideas
 Develop a proposal and documentation for your ideas
 Plan and deliver your pitch to the client

You should present your work using a range of mediums in the planning, production and post- production stages. This could include photographs, audio commentary or written notes to evidence your progression and development of your production in the production stages."

The History of BBC 3

BBC 3 started as a channel on the tv however in 2012 BBC 3 changed to a fully online program and is no longer available. Educate, Inform & Entertain is the slogan of the BBC, this shows what types of programs that they will want to publish and display.

Demographics - We have be given the target audience of 15 to 21 year olds, the usual type of programme the young audience like to watch is something that they can relate to. However young people often watch programmes that are transgressive as they can experience the other side of life through the show. The drama i create will have to have a 15 certificate which means it cannot feature things such as heavy sexual content, violence and drug use however they can be included lightly.

conventions - Dramas tend to be a serialised narrative spread over many episodes, the sound track is very significant in a drama and can help to further the plot. The usual run time of an episode will be around 45 minutes and the series would contain approximately 10 episodes. there are many different genres within drama such as crime, fantasy, superheroes etc. however through research i believe that crime is the most popular with the target audience i am addressing (15-21yo)

Industry Requirements - All programmes delivered to the BBC must be fully editorially and technically checked and ready for transmission prior to delivery. The BBC is funded by tv licences so they are required to create content for all markets.

Constraints - The brief states that the budget i have for the programme is low so it will need to feature basic props, settings etc. The programme will also have to feature very basic or no SFX due to the low budget. Another constraint is that the show will need to have to be a 15 rating to go with the audience.
